What Does It Take To Be Successful?

If you’ve ever taken the time to think about the success companies like Google, Apple, and Microsoft have achieved, you might have noticed something they all have in common – all of them started out somewhere. At one point or another, all these companies were merely small fish in the big sea and faced the same problems that all new startups have. But, eventually, every single one of them became extremely successful.

Now you might be thinking, who on Earth decides the meaning of success? For some, it might be how much money they make, for others, the respect they earn. Only you can decide the meaning of success and whether you are successful or not.

Whatever the word “success” means to you, there are always certain things needed to achieve it.

1. Motivation
Whatever you are trying to achieve, if you don’t have the motivation required to achieve it, you won’t. I’m not just talking about making yourself a schedule and sticking to it, but about doing anything you set your mind to. In other words, if you decide to write a blog post everyday for the next month, you will do everything you can to do that.

2. Perseverance
Not only is patience required for waiting in long ques, but it is also essential for being successful. A blog will not instantly become famous merely a couple hours after it is launched. Also, a blog won’t become famous after its first, second, or hundredth post. Although all the posts and time will eventually lead to a successful blog, they are not enough alone. What is needed is constant posting, interaction with your readers, marketing, and a bit of patience. Slowly you will begin to see the results of your hard work and feel glad you endured any obstacles to reach your current position.

3. Don’t Be Afraid To Take Advice, It Doesn’t Bite
People offer others advice for a reason, to do them a favor and help them out. They don’t just do it for fun or to look smart, I’m sure they couldn’t care less if your blog sucked or not, all they want to do is be a little helpful. What’s even worse is when you specifically ask for advice and then after receiving it, ignore it or take it as a joke. I’m not saying to put every opinion offered into action, but if you hear the same opinion more than once, common sense will tell you that your incorrect.

4. Passion
Other than the fact that all the famous bloggers, actors, and artists started out small, they also have another thing in common – all of them had a deep passion for what they did. If you enjoy blogging and get a blast out of doing it, then do it! Having a deep passion for something does not mean that you’re good at it, however, if you enjoy doing it, then that’s all that matters.

5. Treating Failure As Your Best Friend
For some reason, many people tend to think of failure as something bad or evil. They believe that you should never fail and do everything possible to avoid failure. The truth is, there are certain things that can only be taught by failing at them. Famous blogs, businesses, and experiments all have had their failing points, but later become successful after being analyzed to see where they went wrong. That is why the next time you fail at something, rather than giving up and blaming something or someone, you should see what you did that lead to your failure so you can avoid it in the future. Remember, everyone makes mistakes, no exceptions. ;)

Do you consider yourself successful? What are some of the things you did to reach your level of success?

@Siddharth, my favorite one is also the fifth!

@Melvin, thanks, I just noticed it a couple hours ago, really happy :)

@Jim Iwg, I meant that instead of hating failure, you should take it as a chance to learn :) By the way, thanks for telling me about the link

@Tom, very true, didn’t think of it that way

I think these are really the core of being successful – I also think status and experience plays a big role in how well you will do as a blogger. Also if we look at all famous blogs that have kept their first posts you will see that most don’t have a single comment.

I think sometimes having something unique really helps.

@Sabeur, thanks man :) I was going to add “Thinking Outside The Box” to the list, but for some reason I didn’t

  9. Btw – Cheap GPS is a spammer, hit a couple of my blogs with the exact same post.

@Jason, thanks for telling me, I had a hunch but wasn’t sure :)

  11. Thank you. I just started a blog last week, and I am getting quite frustrated with it (already) because people keep on ’stumbling’ into it, and then going out at 0:00 seconds. It’s based on the idea of how you can ignore your way to happiness, but it doesn’t seem to work, becaue people are following the advice that I am marketing – i.e. ignore – by ignoring the website! LOL:) But as you said, it’s a matter of passion. An audience is not that necessary for me to write, but it would be nice, lol:)

Thanks again for the tips. Just gotta be patient I guess

  12. I think the single most beneficial quality that will allow you to be successful is perserveince and patience. Sometimes you need to just keep on working it day after day. Sometimes it can even take years before you manage to accomplish something.

  13. you need number 1 to accomplish any of them
