Search Engine Friendly Titles In Less Than 60 Seconds

search engines
Previously to starting this blog, I had another one related to Symbian phones. At that time, I didn’t know anything about usability, SEO, or pretty much anything else to do with websites. The domain was a free one (blogspot.com), I used free hosting, and my articles were not the best (or even close). Yet know that I think of it, there seems to be one thing that never failed to surprise me. The fact that I got around 100 unique visitors a day from search engines. I know that might not seem much, but for a blog with nothing really special, that was good enough for me :)

That got me thinking, what is the true potential behind search engines? So when I started this blog, I decided on making it as search engine friendly as possible. Anyway, enough stories, and right to the point :roll:

Have you ever stumbled upon (no, not the toolbar) a website that had a title looking similar to this: highest quality wordpress premium themes, free premium themes, best theme, premium themes, high quality wordpress theme, remix editor, wordpress cms, custom wordpress template, paid wordpress themes

I’m sure that we’ve all seen something like that, whether it’s for wordpress themes, mobile themes, or anything other type of themes. Whenever I come across a site with a title like that, it usually gets closed in less than ten seconds. Even if something on that site really caught my attention, I wouldn’t think twice about bookmarking it.

The only reason sites use those kind of titles is to stuff as many keywords as possible in their title, which rarely works. What they will do, is turn people off and send them away from your site, which I’m sure you don’t want. When you are picking your titles, remember to keep them as simple as possible. Short enough so others recognize the purpose of the page and at the same time, see if it’s what they’re looking for.

HomePage Title

This should contain the name of your website along with a nice and short description, usually your site’s tagline. Some people prefer to have the description before the title, but I don’t really think it matters that much in terms of ranking (if you know it does, please tell me). Remember, a good description will increase the likelihood of people clicking your website from search results.

Category Titles

Depending on how crowded you niche is, or how well you rank, you could be first in position for a term like “Blog Design” if one of your categories was named that. This could bring you in a few extra hundred visitors a month, and come on, who wouldn’t like that?

Post Titles

All that is needed here is the post title, nothing else. I’ve seen a lot of people who keep their blog’s name and description after the post title. Having more words in a post title can decrease the value of certain keywords, which results in lower rankings. This doesn’t really apply to ages, but then again, nobody really wants their Contact page ranking first in Google.

Now just copy and paste the following code over everything between the tag found under the tag in the header.php file of your template. Be sure to back up your previous code just in case the sky falls on your head, or you don’t like what you see.

<?php if (is_home()) { //If it's the homepage ?>
<?php bloginfo('name'); ?> | <?php bloginfo('description') ?>
<?php } elseif (is_search()) { //If it's a search page ?>
Search Results For "<?php the_search_query() ?>" | <?php bloginfo('name'); ?>
<?php } elseif (is_404()) { //If it's a 404 page ?>
Glooks! It's A 404! | <?php bloginfo('name'); ?>
<?php } elseif (is_single()) { //If it's a single post ?>
<?php single_post_title(); ?>
<?php } elseif (is_page()) { //If it's a single page ?>
<?php single_post_title(); ?>
<?php } elseif (is_category()) { //If it's a category page ?>
<?php single_cat_title(); ?>
<?php } else { //If it's none of the above?>
<?php wp_title(' '); ?> | <?php bloginfo('name'); ?>
<?php } ?>

Wasn’t that fast? :D If you run into any problems don’t be afraid to leave a comment, I don’t bite.
Oh yeah, after copying the code, try doing a search, you’ll be surprised :D

    @Kenneth sebastian, thank you :D

  11. Nice tips, Rajaie!
    It doesn’t have to be that tough getting additional traffic and sure: a good title is vital here. Any thought about how to come up with titles appealing to readers AND search engines?

  12. by Rajaie AlKorani at 12:56 pm on 24/06/08

    @Joakim Ditlev, well, I’d say you have to use a few keywords in the title and at the same time, make the people searching want to click them. For example, I used the term “less than 60 seconds” to intrigue people and increase the probability of clicking the link :D

  13. Nice article. It will be helpful for newbies.

  14. this is what am looking for thanks mate :D

    @Agent 001, thanks, I’m glad I could help you, or anyone else that learned from it.

    @narendra.s.v, glad you found it useful :D

  16. Hey. These tips are really helpful. I once used to believe that SEO isn’t much important, but now I know that by implementing SEO in your blog or site helps a you a long way. I suggest using SEO-friendly themes made by Chris Pearson. The one I use is the Copyblogger theme.

  17. by Rajaie AlKorani at 1:37 pm on 25/06/08

    @Ganesh, thanks, and I agree with you about SEO helping in the long run.

    Also, Chris Pearson recently released his Thesis Theme (http://diythemes.com/thesis/) which is very search engine friendly (but not free).

  18. Thats why I love All-in-one SEO so much :D

  19. thanks for sharing these cool tips with us

  22. by Rajaie AlKorani at 12:25 pm on 14/07/08

    @OPENGIGA, that is a huge problem if most of your traffic is from search engines, glad you solved it out :)

  23. Thanks for sharing. Going to try it out for my blog.

  24. by Rajaie AlKorani at 4:09 pm on 26/07/08

    @moserw, sure thing, don’t mention it! :)

  25. I recently changed my title tag.

    First my title has my targeted keyphrase followed by a short description then my website address. I know rank fourth for a competitive keyword rather than seventeenth before the title tag change!

    Hey Mr. Free PS3,
    That’s great to hear mate, it’s the simple things you do that ultimately make the difference.
