Enough With All The Blog Contests!

I recently reached 100 subscribers, thanks to everyone that subscribed!

We’ve all seen them, the blog contests with thousands of dollars worth of prizes and other priceless items. All you have to do to be entered into the contest is subscribe to the feed (even though you’re already subscribed via RSS), blog about the contest, Stubmle the post, and promote the blog through multiple other ways. You get a chance to win some great prizes, the blog gets some free exposure, and the sponsors become famous, so far so good, right? Wrong!

Is it just me, or does it seem that more and more blogs nowadays are overdoing the whole blog contest thing? Some have even gone to the extent of having monthly contests where readers get the chance to win cheesy prizes ranging from expired domains to free advertising on dead blogs.

Don’t get me wrong, blog contests are great and everything, but sometimes people just don’t know when to stop. Yes, I do know that they generate tons of links and free exposure, but when you start holding too many contests, the prizes will eventually decrease in value and end up doing more bad than good. Sure, you might get yourself an easy 20 subscribers, but why not focus on obtaining valuable and long term loyal readers instead?

Just something I had to get off my chest, as it really has become annoying seeing the number of blog contests lately. If you really want to know how to hold a killer contest then stay tuned for my next post :)

  1. Rightly said ;)

  2. congrats on 100 subscribers….

  3. Contests? I’m too lazy to even join.

  4. Rajaie, congratulations on reaching the 100 subscriptions mark.

As for the contests, I tried couple of them not to avail any good. What I usually do is, I subscribe to their RSS and enroll myself for the contest and in no-win scenario (which is the case usually) I will immediately unsubscribe. I do not think that contests will bring in quality traffic - it’s only a temporary benefit!

I am staying away from contests these days… however, bloggingidol kind of contests are somewhat okay.

  5. congratz and am already in ;)

  6. Congrats on 100 subscribers. Mind suggesting to some of your readers to help me make that?
Anyway, people are overdoing the contest thing. In my 10-11 months of blogging, I have not held a single contest. I hope to hold my first and probably yearly contest in either October (when the blog started) or December (when my birthday is). I am trying to make it worthwhile to enter, having special ways to gain points that might not even promote me, and also have valuable prizes. Anyone want to sponsor? That’s all the spam I have for now.

  7. You sure??? Right at the end of the post you are advertising about your upcoming competition…

@moserw, I’m not talking about an upcoming competition, but about a post that will help you hold a killer contest ;)

  9. congratulations for having 100+ subscribers. I think i really need to subscribe now on your blog :D

  10. some are pretty evil to create contest blogs and fill it w/contest posts…

  11. Yeah, blof contests with crappy prizes suck… of course, when someone else OFFERS to sponsor a good prize then I would take it.

And it just happens that ML sponsored a Nintendo Wii in my current contest and a Flip Mino, iPod, gift card and USB pen in my last one.

    Hey, I didn’t ask… they offered.

  12. @Melvin - I was going to do that!

@Jay, hehehe, I have no problem when other people offer to sponsor good prizes :)

  14. Heh, sorry Rajaie I just launched a contest today. I’d be glad if you participated in it too. ;)

@Lucas, I generally don’t have a problem with a few contests every now and then, but sometimes people just don’t know when to stop!

  16. @Rajaie
Well that annoys me too. :) There are blogs which run contests weekly and that’s just… too much. Ugh! It’s like they’re being maintained solely for contests and such.

  17. First of all, congratulations on reaching the 100-subscriber mark!

About the whole contest thing, I agree that bloggers are overdoing it too much. Everywhere I go, I see a contest on this blog and that. My blog has already been up for about a year and I’ve done a few contests here and there. But it’s been a long time since I have, so I can’t even remember the last time I ran a contest. I am planning to start another one soon though. :)
