9 Things You Never Thought John Chow Could Teach You About Blogging
A lot of people around the blogosphere consider John Chow’s blog to be a disgrace to the make money online niche. Heck, if you Google the phrase John Chow sucks, you will be presented with mountains of posts bashing John and his blog. Most of them revolve around the same point, that John is scammer whom maintains his place at the top by scamming innocent people out of their hard earned money.
Although there are a few things John does that I don’t agree with, the fact remains, he’s
making $30,000+ a month; not me. Don’t worry, this isn’t another post aimed at taking John and his fan base down, far from it. What I’ll be doing is showing you the things that you never would have expected to learn from John Chow about blogging and making money online.
I know how this sounds. How could a person that blogs about last night’s dinner possibly teach you anything related to making money online and blogging? Well, rather than focusing on his elegant dinners, you should be trying to answer this question… why is John so successful?
1. Google isn’t the Internet
As hard as it may be to believe, Google is not the Internet. Sometimes, not playing by Google’s rules will do you more good than harm. When John decided to ditch Google, tons of people started talking about what he had done which lead to more traffic then he could possibly imagine. Am I telling to do follow in his footsteps? No. What I’m saying is that you shouldn’t depend on Google for everything.
2. There’s no such thing as bad publicity
Every few weeks, a new post pops up around the Internet trying to convince others what an idiot John is. Most of the time, the blogger writing the post will be an idiot himself and will end up linking several times to John’s blog and occasionally including a screenshot of it. With all that publicity, how would you expect John not to be famous?
3. There will always be people that hate you for being successful
No matter how popular you are, there will always be certain people that hate you for simply being successful. Usually these are 37 year olds living in their mother’s basement who never accomplished anything in life. All you can do is ignore them… and laugh.
4. Lighten up
For Pete’s sake, get a sense of humor if you don’t already have one. That is why so many people admire John, because of his great personality. Nobody wants to be friends with a hard-head, nor do they want to read their blog. Use smilies and crack a joke (or try) every now and then, humans tend to like that
5. Don’t listen to the critics
Stop listening to people tell you what you can and can’t do. Nothing is impossible if you set your mind to it. Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it… In other words, if you constantly listen to people tell you that you will never be able to do this and that, then you probably won’t. The only reason people say something is impossible is because they themselves were not able to accomplish it.
6. Good grammar isn’t required to make a living online
Let’s face it, John’s native language is NOT English and his grammar isn’t that great, and yet he’s the one making a living by writing. You don’t need to be a native English speaker to succeed online, all you need is a bit of direction and passion.
7. If you think something is right, say it
I despise people that seem to agree with everything and everyone… all the time. Ask them what they want to have for lunch, and they’ll say “I’ll have what your having”, ask them what shirt they think is better, they’ll say “What do you think?”. Obviously there are limits to what you should and shouldn’t say on your blog, but if you think something is right, don’t be afraid to tell the world.
8. It isn’t called your blog for nothing
It’s called your blog for a reason; because it’s YOURS. If you want to write about what you had for dinner yesterday, then you do that. Nobody is forcing others to read your blog, they do it because they want to.
9. Your posting frequency shouldn’t have anything to do with you much you make
Before John was making $30,000+/Month, he still posted as much as he does today. Don’t start increasing your posting frequency because you’re making more money, and don’t decrease it because you aren’t. Let me tell you this, bloggers that blog for the sole purpose of making money will NEVER succeed. Ever.
You see, maybe you couldn’t have learned these things directly from John’s blog, but after studying and analyzing his success, you start to see what makes him so successful. And for those of you whining about how John scams people into buying useless crap to make a quick buck, NOBODY is forcing them to buy anything. You don’t like his blog, don’t read it, it’s that simple.
It would surprise you how studying the more successful people around you will make you a better person and blogger. You should try it every once in a while

While people have all the rights in the world to write what they think, some actually try to make publicity out of it.
I agree with most of your points.
some People’s stomach starts burning when they hear just a good word about John chow.Every one can become John chow.I do agree what U say Rajaie.
While I agree with most of your points, I do believe that Chow is an idiot. And that’s what makes him so famous
Blame the game not the player
… he needed to be different than the others.
I started the idea of setting up my own blog after seeing John Chow’s success however I hate his content. Most of the fanfare he has and those who comment that are doing it just for the heck of it.
These days if there is any good post on his blog, that would have been written by some guest posters. Even his reviews are not complete - since it’s John Chow writing, some junk content will do (review is targeting his number of visitors). And always remember that things that makes money for him does not make the same for all other bloggers.
Despite all these I admire his knack of making money though through unethical ways… As for the good reading, I will look elsewhere.
Cheers.
Ajith
My feelings are that John’s blog isn’t about making money any more it is about being an internet mogul which means he can write about his celebrity status, the perks he gets, the way he spends his money.
People read Chow’s blog now because they dream to achieve what he has and are less interested in learning how to do it and more interested in seeing his success.
John got popular less by teaching and more by bragging. His income reports made him famous and instead of telling you how much he makes now he tells you how he spends it and people love it.
Anybody that doesn’t like John’s blog shouldn’t read it, but he is successful and capable of capturing his audience so I don’t know what the fuss is about.
Adam
That was the same thing which i also say … no one is forced to read someones blog … and also that 8th point was a gud one too .. agree with max points stated here
Swastik - That’s true, some believe that they have to share their opinion with the rest of the world
Harish - Haha, some people really do hate him
Ikki - Everyone has their opinions…
Sabeur - That’s a good way to put it
Ajith - I agree with you, but like I said, you don’t need to read his blog to learn new things, just observe him and his tactics
Adam - No fuss really, people just like giving their opinions about John
Puneet - Ya, I mean why do people feel compelled to read someone’s blog if they don’t want to?
Hello Rajaie
great post mate, i like the way you have put your points excellent
As Adam said today John is not interested in teaching you how to make money online. rather how you can spend the money you have earned online and how to leave a lavish life,
i think John need new tag line for his blog
it should be “I make money online by showing dream of making money online”
but one thing i agree with you and millions of other that he is one Smart A$$ who know how to keep his reader glued to his blog and how to entertain them.
Sunil - Hehe, what he shows us is how much he enjoys spending his money!
Yes, he really is one of the best Internet marketers I’ve heard of.
John has stopped telling people about how to make money he write on everything except that these day
but hats off to him for having a large base without much support from Google, just goes to show that blogs can do good without the big daddy. Also you ve made a great point that you dont need to know English to make money blogging..Great post overall..
Great post Rajaie. I really never thought he could teach us such things. Thanks for sharing.
I still think he’s an idiot, though.
Totally agree with you Rajaie. I don’t read John Chow and nobody is forcing me to either. That does not mean I hate him or find fault with everything he does. I mind my business and as long as I am not bothered it should be fine. I guess this does not always work out in our present world… but I totally agree with your observations and thoughts.
ZK - It isn’t that Google can’t help, but I doubt he could have got as much attention from the search engines than from his other sources.
Wong - haha, the beauty of the world, that everyone can have their own opinions
moserw - That’s right, what ever happened to minding our own business?
i agree with google is not everyhing. We can do many thing at internet. Google is not a king to me. We have many king todays.
As per his Sept. earning post , he is poised to touch 40K each month, thats awesome for 2 posts a day
well said, i couldnt agree with you more..
come on guys..
I personally like all the internet gurus, John Chow actually shares some of his techniques more than some paid e-books…
what he’s doing today is enjoying his consequences of what he invested his time and efforts in the past.
nevertheless, it’s a great article to read.. but that will make him more famous.. the first thing i want is, anti-group of anything.. you get more famous and more publcize.. LOL
Maybe, we can’t learn anything from Chow about making money online, but we sure can learn a lesson on from his story.
Ganesh - Yes, definitely.
#3 is so TRUE, many hates JC for being the evil blogger.
sharing for thanks.. i wish the successfrom now on writing
Number one on your list -
Do you not think that googles grip on the internet is growing day by day. It’s not through aggression or unfair tactics that they are dominating, but because what they do is usually a lot better than what others do.
Their success and the way their influence is moulding the web is creating a much steadier environment, moving away from the previous 10 years in which the online world was a little bit of a wild west. (An environment where get rich quick and suspect business practice was rife)
Online success is still possible, but it now requires harder work (although not necessarily hard) and a bit more talent.
Therefore I’m happy if google DOES become the internet and we have to adhere to their rules. That way, the strong (and deserved) will rise to the top playing by fair and even rules.
this things are agreeable
however, google is the top priority,
“shouldn’t depend on Google for everything” i’m agree with this statement.
let’s try look-for another way…..
